Deut 4:5-8 & John 4:39-42 – Are we all alone in our efforts to evangelise? Thankfully, no. The church both adorns the gospel we proclaim and supports and helps us in our outreach. What an asset the church is to our evangelism! Let’s make use of it.
The reformation hit the church like an earthquake, and the aftershocks were felt long after Luther and Calvin. Across Europe (but especially in England), believers (called Puritans) long to see all of church life conformed to Scripture. It’s a pressure-filled period of church history, yet through it all, Jesus builds His church. May we continue […]
Mark 3:20-30 – What do Jesus’ enemies say about him? How does Jesus respond? Matt helps us understand how Jesus’ authority over evil helps us deal with evil in our own lives.
2 Corinthians 5:20 – The goal of evangelism is to be an ambassador for Jesus Christ. We are to bear witness to his message: “Be reconciled to God.” Genesis 17:6-7 – We are ambassadors of Jesus Christ as a part of God’s covenant community of believers. We don’t bear this message alone.
2 Timothy 2 – Focus and discipline in the Christian life.
2 Timothy 1 – Start a legacy; build a dynasty.
Rediscovered! For centuries, the church had been distracted and confused. During this remarkable period, the Word of God and the Gospel itself are brought back to the centre. Through Luther, Calvin and many others reformation is in the air. May we learn from this era, that we might continue to reform the church by the […]
Mark 2:1-12 Two reasons why Jesus’ claims to be God are true.
Gen 1:27-28 & Deut 7:7-9 – “Evangelism” is a word that generates anxiety for most Christians. Understanding what evangelism is (and what it isn’t!), is the first step towards faithfulness (no matter how we might feel!).
Genesis 41-44 – One day Joseph is in prison and the next he’s practically the most powerful man in the world! In Joseph’s story, we see just how wonderful and surprising God’s workings are. We’re urged to praise him and to… repent.
The church faces a crisis. Reform is vital, but the church “digs in its heels” and entrenches itself against it. Learning and preaching are on the rise, but how will Christ’s church fare in this next pivotal phase? Will the church heed worldly philosophy or Scripture? This is a key question for the church in […]
1 Peter 4:19 – Suffering inevitably comes upon God’s people. We must entrust ourselves to God and continue to do good.
Genesis 39-40 – Joseph’s life is the stuff of nightmares. Betrayed, enslaved, falsely accused, imprisoned and seemingly forgotten – this is Joseph’s lot. From this grim account, Christians can learn 2 facts about hard times: firstly, God is with us, and secondly so is temptation.
As the church continues to be distracted in the so called “Dark Ages,” rays of light burst forth. Jesus continues to build His church, even though she’s all too often impure. There’s a lot we can yet learn from Bernard, Anselm and Hildegarde von Bingen. Most importantly, God’s people must be devoted to Christ! This […]
James 3.14-16 warns believers about the dangers of envy and ambition.
Genesis 37-38 shows us the rise and fall of Joseph and Judah. We see that God’s plan remains in place despite outward trials and inward sins.
As the Christianity spreads and the church gains influence, so too does the church become distracted. It’s an era of monks, icons, popes and serfs. As Christianity spreads, the world becomes a better place, but the church must beware pursuing worldly popularity! This is the third of 9 studies in Church History.
Romans 12:19 – Is there any place for vengeance in the Christian’s life? No. Do we often, though, seek the downfall of others (at least in our minds!)? In Romans, Paul gives us helpful principles to fight against the urge to “get back” at that person. Listen and grow.
As Christianity is legalised and the Roman Empire crumbles, the church enjoys newfound fruitfulness. Doctrine is clarified, and the Gospel spreads. At the same time, new dangers emerge – false teaching gains influence and unbiblical rituals are accepted by many. The message for us is clear: hold tightly to Scripture and be wary of worldly […]
Colossians 1:28 – Speaking of Jesus and growing to maturity in Christ – this is what the church should be all about. How did St Giles do towards accomplishing these aims in 2015? What should our priorities be in the year ahead? Listen in to find out.
